The OpenPHD plan is devised to adapt a low-res PHD plan into an open source format so that an independent PHD level education can be achieved using free resources like iTunesU, MIT OpenCourseWare, Ted.com, Academic Earth, podcasts, public libraries, seminars, workshops, lectures and my own readings. Education never happens in a void and to that end I will be recruiting a community of crowd sourced advisers, directors and co-learners.
Finding information, classes and readings is not the hard part. The hard part will be to find graduate level classes or to give myself tasks that are graduate level in relation to those classes. In addition it will be important to make sure my education interacts with the real world by way of an internship or volunteer position. Its two easy to just read and write and not actually process or apply information.
OPEN PHD + 12 4 day intensives over 3 years, 7 years max, to be followed by a dissertation and a defense. Each intensive is worth 4 credits. On occasion a class can be turned into a two day weekend intensive.
+48 credits, 14 credits for dissertation and defense.
+ Homework will be presented to the crowdsourced community by way of PDFs, podcasts and YouTube videos.
+ Crowdsourced Examination/Defense
+Participate and present at confrences (online conferences)
+ Document everything! Class and reading notes on a wiki or blog.
